The Big XII and Baylor Sports

The Baylor Bears remain in the Big XII after months of turmoil in the conference. Nebrasaka and Coloroda have both chosen to flee the conference, leaving the conference with ten schools. The Bears are expected to remain strong in several sports over the next few years, despite playing tough schools in the Big XII such as Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Oklahoma, and Oklahoma State.

An Inside Peak at Baylor Sports:

The Baylor Men's Basketball team is set to make another run in the 2010-2011 season. They will look to star guard LaceDarius Dunn to put up big numbers this year. Quincy Acy, the 6' 7" Junior, will have a big impact down low and on the boards for the Bears. J'mison Morgan, the UCLA transfer, will replace big man Josh Lomers. The Bears landed two ESPN 100 players in the offseason, Perry Jones III and Stargell Love. Both players will gain plenty of playing time and will be instrumental in the Bears run this year.

The 2nd ranked Lady Bears Basketball team will look to 6' 8" phenom Brittney Griner to have another huge season. Griner lead the Bears in points, blocks and rebounds last season. Guard Melissa Jones will see plenty of playing time in her senior season. She is great at passing the ball as well as shooting from all angles of the court. The head coach Kim Mulkey is confident her team can make a deep run in the tournament this year with the talent on the team.

The Baylor Football squad had their first winning season since joining the Big XII conference. The Bears have earned themselves a bowl game after going 7-5 on the season. The biggest vicotry came against Texas, as the Bears went on to win 30-22. Quarterback Robert Griffin III held the team together and has been mentioned in several awards selctions, including the Heisman Trophy. This season will have a huge impact on the Bears future, as they are in great position to land top recruits and compete in the future.

The Baylor track and field team will likely build on past success over the next few years. The Bears have had several athletes turn professional. most recently is David Gettis who now plays in the NFL for the Carolina Panthers. Jeremy Wariner is an olympic athlete who won three gold medals in the most recent olympics. He ran the 400 meter dash for the Bears.

The Tennis team is also set to continue its dominance in the Big XII conference. The bears have world class facilities that have allowed them to attract top talent over the past several years. There are currently three former Baylor tennis players who have turned pro. The Bears will begin their season on January 14th at the Sherwood Cup.

The men's Baseball team looks to remain competitive in the Conference and the Nation. The Bears have had several star athletes over the years who are now in the MLB. The baseball team has recently signed six star athletes for the 2012 season. The Bears have been a powerhouse in recent years, but schools like TCU and Texas have passed them up recently. The Bears hope to get back on track to make it to the College World Series, which they have failed to do so since 2005.

Battle of the Women's Hoops

In a matchup of last season NCAA Tournament semifinals, Baylor and UConn meet again to see who will the number one team to start the season. Baylor enters the game at 3-0 while UConn is 1-0.  The games is set to be televised on ESPN2 as part of their annual college hoops marathon. It is currently the only women's game that is televised on ESPN for the marathon.

UConn has won 79 straight games to date, and they are regarded as one of the best teams ever in any sport. Their last lost came in April of 2008 to Stanford in the NCAA semifinals. UConn has won the NCAA Women's tournament the past two years.

"Whatever happens will happen," Geno Auriemma, coach of the Huskies, said. "If we play great, we have a chance to be really good this season. If we play lousy, then we have a long way to go."

Baylor looks to improve on their great run last year, starting with Sophomore Brittney Griner. The 6' 8" star will be relied upon heavily in the match up. Look for her to block, rebound, and score in great numbers.

UConn and Baylor come into the contest ranked No. 1 and 2.  The two teams played last season in the NCAA Tournament semifinals. UConn defeated the Lady Bears, 70-50, and went on to win its second straight NCAA title.

Baylor Basketball vs. LaSalle

On November 16th the Baylor Bears take on the LaSalle Thundercats. The game will be televised nationally on ESPN. It is a big game for the bears as they are ranked 17th in the nation. This match up will give us a lot of insight as to the future of this team.

One missing component is star guard LaceDarius Dunn. He will remain sidelined until November 22nd. The bears will be challenged without their star guard and will rely heavily on other players to step up.

The Bears are 0-3 all time against LaSalle. While they may have a losing record, the Bears are anything but losers. They will look to power-forward Quincy Acy to be a force down low. Acy had 10 dunks against Texas last year. He is already putting up phenomenal numbers this year.

Meanwhile, Scott Drew remains a target of the NCAA as they are being investigated for recruitment strategies. Allegations have been brought and are continually being questioned, but the Bears remain strong.

After the Men's team plays, the women will take on defending National Champion UConn at 7 p.m. This will be a rematch of last years national championship game.

Sic' Em Bears!

Baylor Basketball Season Begins Tonight

The Baylor Bears begin their basketball season tonight against Midwestern State in an exhibition game at 7. The Bears are ranked 14th in the polls, and they look to capitalize on last years success where they reached the Elite 8 and lost to Duke.

They will be without their star player LaceDarius Dunn, as he continues to be investigated for aggravated assault. The case is likely to be dismissed as the victim is stating no damage was done. The Baylor community is hopeful that he will be back within the next few weeks.

However, the Bears will have to rely on some new talent as well as old to get the job done.

The Bears lost star players Ekpe Udoh, Josh Lomers, and Tweety Carter to either the NBA or graduation. However, the bears have gained much talent during the off-season. They gained a ESPN 100 player in Perry Jones. The 6' 10" Power Forward is expected to make great contributions for the bears. The bears will also rely heavily on Quincy Acy and A.J. Walton. These returning players will be key in getting the Bears back to the elite 8 and hopefully further.

Another addition they will look to is J'mison Morgan, the 6' 11" transfer from UCLA. He will be a major factor in replacing big man Josh Lomers and should see plenty of playing time as the season progresses.

This season should be an fun one, with loads of new talent as well as old. The Bears and the Baylor community remain positive that the team will be able to exceed expectations and deliver a winning season.

See you tonight at the Ferrell Center Baylor fans!

Facebook hate groups

I am about to begin shortly writing a compare and contrast project on two facebook hate groups. I am not sure what topic I am going to choose. Im either going to do a Houston Rockets hate group compared to the Los Angeles Lakers. My other options are researching different groups that related to MLB. I would prefer to choose topics related to sports, as it is probably the most interesting to write about for class. I think a lot of people will comment on these groups which will provide plenty of quotes for me to apply. Let me know what you think!

Working on a Wix website

I have been trying to get my resume and rewards together for a personal resume website I have been building. I plan to use to the site to connect to employers. It is an up and coming way to get a foot in the door, and I plan on exploiting it. The site is really easy to use. It has pre-built web pages, all you have to do is fill in the information. I have been going with a dark look with silver outlining. I think it will look really good when it is done. Now you might be wondering if it costs anything to join? Well no, it does not. The site is free and a great template for all ages to use. Take a look for yourself at wix.com and let me know what you think.

Cameron Park always a blast

I Started going to Cameron Park during my sophomore year. We discovered a place and called in Candy Mountain. It was a little cliff that overlooked the driver, and it was somewhat hard to get to. Now when I go there, it is normally just to run or something physical. Sometimes when my family comes to visit I will take them out there. Anyways, if you havn't been to Cameron Park, check it out! Bring a bike or your running shoes, and a couple of friends, and expect a good time!

Tailgate party this Saturday for Business Majors

Accounting majors involved in Beta Alpha Psi, the accounting honor fraternity, will be hosting a tailgate party this Saturday prior to the Baylor vs. Colorado game. The event will take place in the parking lot adjacent to the stadium and is absolutely free for every student who attends.

President of the society, Sam Cozad, said "The event is a great way for students to get involved in the business school. The accounting program is the best and we want everyone to feel welcome."
The event will be open to all business majors in order to promote unity among business school students. "We want as many people as possible to attend," Cozad said.

The event is set to begin at 11 a.m. and will include many games, drinks, and activities. Among the games to be included are beer pong, flip cup, and various card games. The twist: each game will have trivia and other questions related to business school majors. "The emphasis on interacting with other students turned out to be a big hit last year, and we expect the same again this year," Trey Brown, Public Relations Chair, said.

Drinks will include beer, soda, and water. The accounting program is striving to quench your thirst!

As for activities, we will be hosting recruiters from the major accounting firms to come and spend time with the students. This will provide an excellent chance for students to make contacts for future internships or other career opportunities. We hope to see you there! "We look forward to hosting the Big 4 accounting firms at our tailgate. We know it will be a blast!," Cozad said.

Finished my bio on Matt

Just got to class and turned in my bio report on Matt. It was a fun experience to get to know him better and his goals in life. It is awesome how much he has accomplished over the past four years. It will be even more exciting to see what he does in the upcoming years. I talked to him earlier today and found out he is going to ACL for the weekend. That will be a good break from school! As for me, I will be in Houston and am going to the Texans game on Sunday. I look forward to spending time with my family this weekend!

Baylor Student Goes Beyond Expectations

Ever since being accepted to Baylor University, Senior Matt Thompson has pursued perfection in his school work and extracurricular activities. The 22 year-old from Houston began his college life like any other student, not knowing what to expect or what he was going to major in. The honor student soon discovered an interest in accounting and began to pursue that career path. “Since I have always been pretty decent at math I figured that accounting would provide the best career opportunities as well as career growth opportunities,” Matt Thompson said. Thompson has since added a second major in Real Estate, with dreams of obtaining both a CPA and Real Estate license.
Thompson enjoying time
with friends
During his freshman year he was able to make some close friends in the accounting core that would help keep him motivated over the next four years. Two friends, Vincent Harris and Jonathan Ganthier, were especially influential in his college life. Harris helped Matt recognize the importance of pursuing the CPA exam after finishing the accounting core. “CPA’s are very influential in the business world, and will help throughout your career,” Vincent Harris said. Ever since, Thompson has been on track to take the CPA exam upon graduation.
Ganthier has helped Thompson with real estate courses and studying for the State Exam. While discussing Thompson’s college life, Ganthier said “Matt Thompson has been working extremely hard to obtain his real estate license. The classes, outside studying, and practice exams will surely pay off in the next couple of years as he begins a real estate or accounting career.”
While many students are partying on the weekends, Thompson has been busy studying for the LSAT with dreams of attending Law School in the Spring. “I am not sure where I want to attend yet, but I have applied to several schools including University of Texas, Baylor University, and University of Houston,” Thompson said. He has even been driving to Houston on Saturday’s for an LSAT prep course.
Senior Brooke Yancy, a close friend, described to us a typical day for Thompson when she is able to see him. “Normally when I talk to him, he is busy at the library or in a group meeting. I have never met someone who is so goal oriented. His passion towards what he wants to achieve is surreal,” Yancy exclaimed.

Matt attending a Baylor game

While this may seem like Thompson has accomplished a lot during his duration at Baylor, he has done far more than just school work. He has been accepted into Beta Alpha Psi, The Accounting Honor Fraternity. Requirements for this club are a 3.5 accounting GPA. “While not many people are accepted into this club, I saw Matt work tirelessly over the years and get accepted. This has opened many doors for Matt,” Harris said.
Indeed it has opened many doors for the goal oriented student. Last year during the accounting recruitment season, Thompson looked to set himself apart from the competition. With his resume filled out, he was hopeful he would land a big position, and that he did. After applying for interviews with the Big 4 accounting firms of PricewaterHouseCoopers, KPMG, Ernst & Young, and Deloitte & Touché, he was happy to learn that he would get intern offers from all four firms. “I remember getting the offers. First thing I did was call my mom. She was so excited for me, and it made me feel great. After much research though, I decided to be an audit intern for PricewaterhouseCoopers,” Thompson explained.
Now Thompson is faced with multiple accounting job offers, yet the December graduate is persistent on attending law school. “I think Matt should pursue Law School if his heart tells him to,” Ganthier said. “I don’t believe there is a challenge he can’t complete.”
Now that graduation is nearing, that decision is becoming even more important. With recruiters trying to employ Thompson full time, it is important that he makes the decision that is best for him and his future.

Contemplating who to Interview

So, I have a dilemma in my Journalism class. I need to pick a Waco personality to interview and can not decide who I want to do. My choices are either the famous Pat Green, or Baylor's star quarterback Robert Griffin. Pat Green is best known for his country music. He is known to frequent George's bar up the road. He plays in Waco regularly and is a college favorite. On the other hand, Robert Griffin is a great quarterback. He has helped turn the Baylor Bears football team around. Despite an injury plagued season last year, RGIII seems to be electric.

Vitek's for great food

I just got back from going to one of my favorite local dining spots, Vitek's. Before going I already knew what I was going to get. I simply settled for the best option on the menu, the Gutpak! It's a nice lunch that comes with Frito's, beans, sausage, pork, and delicious sauce. It reminds me of the old days when mom used to make Frito-pie. I suggest Vitek's if you have not been yet. Just be careful to make sure they are open as they tend to have strange hours.

Changes to AP style book for 2010!

The 2010 AP style book was recently updated with exciting changes! One major change is that 'web site' is now correctly spelled 'website'. Many cities have been added to the the correct country they belong to, which were previously ignored. The great recession was added to reference the slumping economy from 2007-08. We are very excited about these changes and will update you with further details!
